Sheep Transportation Permit

This form allows you to purchase a permit to transport sheep across county lines in Montana, or to leave the state of Montana.

The online Sheep Permit fee is $2.25.  ($1.00 permit fee and $1.25 service fee.)

To pay using an eCheck, a bank account and routing number is required.

PLEASE NOTE:
The latest version of all popular browsers are supported (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari).  Browser versions older than two years, including Microsoft Internet Explorer, are not supported and may not work with our online Sheep Permit site.

In order to continue, you must agree to the following permit rules:

  • I understand that the Sheep Transportation Permit will be sent to me using the email address I provide as part of my online Permit purchase.
    • Checking your SPAM or JUNK mail inbox may be necessary.
    • The amount of time to receive a Permit to your email address is dependent upon the speed of your internet provider.
  • Separate sheep transportation permits are to be issued to each individual sheep owner.
  • A sheep transportation permit is needed for county-to-county movement, going to markets outside of the county you’re in, and leaving the state.
  • The owner or agent should list the number of head with each brand description, brand location, brand color, age, breed and gender.
  • The owner or agent must certify these are correct and that the sheep will go to the destination shown on the sheep transportation permit.
  • If a sheep transportation permit is not used, it must be returned with “CANCELED” written across the face of the unused permit(s) and sent to: Dept of Livestock, Brand Enforcement Division, PO Box 202001 Helena, MT 59620-2001, or send an email to lsheeppermits@mt.gov with “Cancel” and the permit number written in the subject line.


If you are unable to print a permit, you may obtain a sheep permit from a livestock inspector or permit writer. Visit this site for a list of inspectors in your area.
